Where do lesbians meet other lesbians?

A question on most of our lips whether gay, straight, bi, single or a couple.

Where do you meet people to make friends or meet new potential lovers.

Here are a few places I have picked up along the way:

For the anti clubbing, anti drugs, smoking and other habits that some of us enjoy:

1. Sports events or start a sport you enjoy, Gyms are good but its mostly a gay male pick up place and people normally like gyming alone listening to an ipod, a better idea would be to join an aerobics class or a team sport for example cricket, soccer, rugby or a martial art. Whether you join in or simply go watch on the sidelines.

2. Hiking, camping, mountain biking, fishing, abseiling and some extreme sports are also a definate bet perhaps do an internet search for some lesbian clubs or get togethers of this nature.

3. Religious / Esoteric - Spiritual centres, one can always find out which centres accept and welcome lesbians.

4. Political organisations, fighting for yours and others rights, finding that special person with as much passion as you have.

5. Other clubs such as book clubs, or perhaps create your own movement, club or party.

General places that involve the bad / fun habbits depending on your perspective:

1. Night Clubs / pubs / bars - perhaps for that perfect 1 night stand.

2. The once a month party - which most cities usually advertise

other:

1. The internet - sites like datingbuzz.co.za ; q.co.za; facebook.com and many many more - there are rules to dating and meeting people off a site so do be careful and be aware.

2. Friends or friends of ex's or ex's of friends etc - even straight friends are a wonderful resource and love trying to match us lesbians up.

3. Owning a cute dog is also a plus and taking them for a walk in the park or for training, should catch you at least some attention.

Whatever you choose, have fun, relax and just be yourself - Ms Right or Ms Right Now should pop into your life when you least expect it!

The Flag and its origins!

What is a flag?
Ans: it is A piece of cloth, usually rectangular, of distinctive color and design, used as a symbol, standard, signal, or emblem.

The Rainbow Flag
The Rainbow Flag is the most popular gay symbol. It was created by the artist Gilbert Baker of San Francisco. In fact, the rainbow was used to symbolize sexuality and gender many times. One can meet it represented in African, Greek and American cultures. Later it was used by political parties, as a symbol of freedom. Jesse Jacksons Rainbow Coalition is a glare example of this. Gilbert Baker understood the need of a symbol, which would unite all the gays. For the first time the rainbow flag was used as homosexual symbol in the San Francisco Gay and Lesbian Pride Parade.
Every color, Gilbert Baker has chosen, symbolizes different aspects of homosexual life.-
Hot pink means sexuality -
Red - life-
Orange symbolizes healing -
Yellow - the sun-
Green - nature -
Blue - art -
Indigo means harmony -
Violet - spirit

The symbolism was borrowed from other freedom movements such as hippie and black civil rights movement. The popularity of the flag boosted very fast. The purpose to use it yearly at the Parades was achieved. To produce it in a big quantity Baker took it to San Francisco Flag Company. But several colors were commercially not available and were replaced by the other colors. The Rainbow flag became popular all over the world. Now it is easily recognized and widespread. After the 1979 Pride Parade it was recognized not only by common people, but as well by the officials. The existence of such a flag was officially registered by the International Congress of Flag Makers.

My personal view, in some ways it gives me a sense of pride on the other hand is there any reason why I should require a flag to represent the fact that I sleep with the same sex?

Queer eye for the Dyke girl

Coming out and going out on the town to meet that wonderful potential partner/lover/friend may lead to some “what do I wear” dilemmas.

So here are some essential dyke clothing:

1. A decent pair of jeans - whatever you feel comfortable in and make sure that you they are a decent fit consider shape, size and type.
2. Camo / Cargo pants – the looser fit is in.
3. Vests – the White, Black or red – plain or with a small print on the neck or the front – the thick strap vests – thin straps with the wrong colour bra is definitely out! i.e. not cool
4. Jacket – Leather or Denim
5. Hats – any kind provided you don’t look like a dork. –
http://fashion-stuff.blogspot.com/search/label/hats%20and%20caps
6. T-shirts – these are great – tighter for those who have the body to wear them, printed with cute logos especially logos that are guaranteed to catch attention.
7. Ties are IN! – small plain colour tie especially Jacket, tie with jeans
8. Some pin striped shirts
9. Some elbow length shirts – black, white, red and blue
10. A black collared, long sleeved shirt
11. Abercrombie & Fitch Abigail type of zip up hoodies
12. Shoes: boots – bulky “toe crunchers” like Cats, or All Star takkies (tennis shoes); Nike; - Chanel Quarter Boots are in, Cowboy boots are NOT.
13. A Power suit for the “power dyke”
14. Accessorize: if you have a cool tattoo show it off; belts depends what you are wearing; bags – should be practical and should hold your basic needs. – Studded belt is in!
15. Sunglasses are cool but we are not in the 90’s so wearing them on your head at a club looks stupid.

Fashion No NO’s:
1. The flanal checkered shirt IS OUT! Throw them away – unless you are going to ride that tractor!
2. Too much floral is OUT
3. White takkies (tennis shoes) – these are worn on the tennis court – I know Ellen wears hers with black pants but this is a NO NO and the Michael Jackson look of short pants white socks and black shoes also OUT!

As for the haircuts – I will discuss the 8 lesbian haircuts in my next blog

The Lesbian Dictionary

For years Lesbians and other members of our colourful community have some wonderful terms of 'endearment' for each other, I thought I would explore some of these terms and deffinitions.

"Androgyny"
Definition: means to have both male and female characteristics. (An example would be Shane from the popular series The L word.)

"Boi"
Definition: For lesbians, a boi is a woman who is biologically female, but has a boyish appearance or presentation. A boi may be lesbian identified or s/he may be trans identified. For gay men a boi is a gay man who is boyish or young in appearance or identity.

"Baby Dyke"
Definition: A young lesbian or someone who is just coming out of the closet. ( and these girls are really young - from the ages of 14 - 23 years old - they usually hang out at clubs and wear funky hats and ties - fashion to be discussed in my next article)

"Bi-Curious"
Definition: To be bi-curious is to be questioning your sexual orientation. You're not sure if you are bisexual, but you have a curiosity about it. You're openly questioning if you are bisexual or not. ( some bi-curious girls seem to want the already "out" lesbian to have a threesome with her boyfriend and some have a habit or teasing us "out" lesbians and playing games)

Bisexual"
Definition: A person who is sexually and emotionally attracted to both women and men.
(i.e. a girl who has a 100% chance of getting laid!)

"Bulldagger"
Definition: This is a term that was used in the 1920s to define a very butch lesbian. Often Africian American. (not a common term these days)

Bulldyke"
Definition: A very masculine lesbian. Considered offensive by some.
Diesel Dyke would be the more common word - still offensive

Dyke"
Definition: Another word for lesbian. Usually is only used by people who are gay, lesbian, bisexual or trans. A straight person using this word may offend some people.
some people like this term, others don't - I like the term to describe myself and make light of my sexuality, or sometimes use it in causticly and sarcasticly.

"Butch"
Definition: A woman who adopts what would be considered masculine characteristics.

the opposite;

"Femme"
Definition: A feminine lesbian.

usually spotted together, however in this new millenium the new lesbians do not conform to lables and some actually do act and think out the box!

"Lipstick Lesbian"
Definition: A lipstick lesbian is a woman who loves other women, but also loves her clothes and makeup and shoes. She tends to dress on the femmy side.

"Drag King"
Definition: A drag king is a woman who dresses to look like a man, usually for performance. Drag kings are often lesbian, but not always. ( much like the "Drag Queen" described for the boys")

A Girl Crush is strong infatuation that one woman has for another woman who seems beautiful, sophisticated, charming or accomplished. Other:
"Trannydyke or Tranny Dyke"
Definition: A trannydyke is a transgender person who is attracted to women or people with a feminine gender presentation.
